5 Days Serengeti Wildebeest Migration

Our driver will pick you up from your hotel in Arusha. Afterward, enjoy a picnic lunch while traveling to the full-day Ngorongoro Crater tour. Upon arrival, you will descend 2,000 ft into the crater in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Next, explore the crater’s abundant wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Afterwards, ascend to your lodge, perched on the crater rim. Widely known as “Africa’s Eden” and the “8th Natural Wonder of the World,” the crater remains a top attraction for visitors to Tanzania.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) encompasses the crater. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago, a volcanic mountain collapsed due to inactivity. Interestingly, it was once thought to be taller than Mount Kilimanjaro. Over time, the caldera evolved into a unique and vital part of Tanzania’s ecosystem. Measuring 22.5 km across, with rim walls rising 600 m, the crater offers breathtaking views from both inside and along its rim.

Meal: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Simba, A Public Campsite

Today, you will continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, stop for a breathtaking view of the Ngorongoro Crater. Then, drive onward to Serengeti National Park. Known as “endless plains” in the Maasai language, the Serengeti stretches as far as the eye can see. Scattered across the grassy savannah, bizarre rock formations called kopjes provide lookout points for predators. Depending on the season, you may witness thousands of animals during the famous migration. By late afternoon, arrive at your campsite in the Seronera Valley, in the heart of the central Serengeti. Finally, after supper, fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of the African bush.
Breakfast; Lunch, and Dinner

Today, on our trip of a lifetime, we head north to the very edge of the Serengeti. This world-famous national park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Journey: Central to Northern Serengeti
After breakfast, we drive approximately 5½ hours (155 km) from Central to Northern Serengeti. Along the way, enjoy changing landscapes and abundant wildlife highlights. As we travel, keep your eyes open for surprising sightings.

Day’s Highlight
Northern Serengeti’s landscapes change dramatically, offering wildlife surprises at every turn. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, a rhino may appear!

Afternoon Game Drive in Northern Serengeti National Park
In the afternoon, explore Northern Serengeti’s open woodlands, stretching from Seronera to the Mara River, bordering Kenya. During your drive, discover new areas with exotic names: Bolongonja, Kogatende, Lamai, and the legendary Mara River. Additionally, the region provides a fresh perspective on the Serengeti’s vast wilderness.

We are now following in the footsteps of the Great Migration, great herds of thousands of zebra and wildebeest getting ready to cross the Mara into Kenya, and back again. On a daily basis, crossings cannot be guaranteed, but our driver-guides know the most likely places to witness them, one of Nature’s most awe-inspiring sights. Patience is required! And if you’re not lucky enough to witness a crossing, there’s always tomorrow, and in Northern Serengeti, plenty more to see today. Overnight stay at Lobo Public Campsite.  Breakfast; Lunch, and Dinner

Day’s Highlight
If you are lucky today, a rare black rhino might cross your path.

Morning Safari (Game Drive) in Northern Serengeti
As you wake for a second day in Northern Serengeti, note that this area rivals the south for wildlife. After breakfast, join your driver-guide on a full-day game drive. Along the way, watch for elephants, buffalo, eland, and gazelles. With luck, you might spot something extraordinary, perhaps a cheetah or even a rare black rhino.

Afternoon Safari (Game Drive) in Northern Serengeti
Later, based on yesterday’s and this morning’s sightings, your guide will lead you to new locations. If you missed a Mara River crossing, conditions this afternoon might allow one. With their intimate knowledge, the guides know where and when it might occur. In addition, Northern Serengeti offers giraffes, elephants, and dik-diks, ensuring wildlife excitement continues. Finally, return to Lobo Public Campsite for an overnight stay.
